John Hoefling Award
Each year the John Hoefling Award will be presented to an individual that consistently contributes to and promotes/supports Oregon's Snowsport Industries.
2005-06 John Hoefling Award;
Recipient: Roy Gault, Statesman Journal
Roy Gault has shown a willingness to create constant communication between himself and the Oregon ski areas. When Mr. Gault has a snow-related story on his agenda, he has been known to contact every ski area in Oregon, to make sure his facts are straight and find out what is new and happening at each respective ski area.
For this reason, and his thoroughness on every snow-related piece, it is a pleasure to award Roy Gault as the first recipient of the John Hoefling Award.
John Hoefling
John Hoefling’s life-long passion for skiing began as a child getting to school during northern Wisconsin winters. He met his wife, June, on the slopes of Mt. Hood when he was a lift operator at Summit Ski Area. His ski involvement included owning and directing Western Ski Pros Ski School, at one time encompassing three Mt. Hood ski areas; volunteer ski patrolman; ski instructor certification examiner; co-founder and co-director Oregon Snowsports Industries Assn. (dba Ski Oregon); co-founder Northwest Hall of Fame of Winter Sports; ski shop co-owner; participation on numerous ski-related committees in Oregon and the Northwest; director of the Northwest Pro Ski Tour; ski equipment rep; and host of the television program, "Oregon Skiing," for two years. Endless writing credits include correspondent to SKI Magazine, Ski Racing, Ski Business and Ski Area Management; contributor to Ski Oregon and NW Skier; editor/publisher of Skiers Almanac, Along the Ski Trails and Northwest Skiing; and ski columns in the Oregon Journal and other local newspapers. John was awarded Lifetime Honorary Membership in the North American Snowsports Journalists Association, in which he was a forty-year member, served as Executive Secretary for 16 years and a Board member for another dozen, and was honored as Mt. Hood’s 2004 "King Winter" for his immeasurable contributions to skiing. (This informaiton is from the North American Snowsports Journalist Association)
