About Ski Oregon
Mountain Ethics
Outdoor recreation is an important part of the Oregon lifestyle and snowsports provide a unique and enjoyable way to experience and appreciate the Oregon environment. Part of Ski Oregon's objectives is to keep skiers and riders safe and also help to protect and enhance the pristine qualities of the Oregon environment, and as Oregonian's, we are all ambassadors of the Ski Oregon playgrounds.
The Skier/ Snowboarder Responsibility Code
Skiing can be enjoyed in many ways. At ski areas you may see people using alpine, snowboard, telemark, cross country and other specialized ski equipment, such as that used by disabled or other skiers. Regardless of how you decide to enjoy the slopes, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are elements of risk involved that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Observe the Skier/Boarder Responsibility Code listed below and share with other skiers and riders the responsibility for a great skiing/riding experience.
- Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
- People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
- You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above (ex: stopping below a steep run or on the landing of a jump in the terrain park).
- Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
- Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
- Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
- Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
Know the code. It's your responsibility.
This is a partial list. Be safety conscious.
Ski Green
Many of Oregon's Ski Areas are leaders in sustaining their environments and fighting against climate change, by supporting the use of clean, renewable energy with Green Tags. Six of Oregon's Ski Areas are participating in the Green Tags program. SkiGreen.org is a partnership between the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) and leaders in the snowsports industry to build support for non-polluting renewable sources of energy (such as wind and solar energy). To learn more, visit Ski Green's website and learn how you can help Keep Winter Cool and purchase your own Mini-Green Tag!
Sustainable Slopes
The National Ski Area Association's (NSAA) Sustainable Slopes program is the Environmental Charter for Ski Areas.
